"Flat Earth Society" of Garfield, NJ is an all original band that displays an array of groove and melody similar to that used by many West Coast bands. This is achieved by using a variety of musical influences and keeping the intensity of East Coast bands.
The band was formed in 1998 by three ex-members of the band HARD (Scott, Ken, Pedro) and joined by friend and old bandmate of Pedros (Freddy).
While with HARD for the past 3 years, the trio established a good following while playing shows in the tri-state area. However, after a difference in opinion in the direction of the band, the original guitarist was let go. Scott then moved to guitar and Freddy was brought in to replace him to play bass.
A live show today shows how good things really can be. Onstage antics and props including outrageous humor, dances, obnoxiousness, and just about any other surprises you can think of are exhibited brazenly all while the music is executed in a tight, unified manner. Shows are often ended with band members switching instruments to provide a unique twist. Anything from the drummer rapping to the guitarist shouting out the ever crowd-pleasing "BOLTS" occur here. This usually stirs up a frenzy for a climatic ending. The key here is physical energy, which is displayed and fed off of. All shows as well as set lists are different in regards to keeping regular fans interested and new comers wanting to come again.
What makes us different from the rest of the bands in our area is that our music is fresh, unique, melodic, and more diverse and open from the rest in the area. Despite the growth of hardcore, rap-core, ska bands, we still stay true to our roots, being one of a handfull of punk bands in New Jersey. Integrating old-school hardcore punk and West Coast Punk our sound is original and varies from song to song. Comparisons and Influences to Flat Earth Society include Pennywise, Bad Religion, Supertouch, old Sick Of It All, The Misfits, Minor Threat, Bouncing Souls, and many more...
